Numerous studies have reported high glutamate levels in the brains of patients with depression, indicating that the glutamate system plays a crucial role in depression (Sanacora et al., 2004; Kendell et al., 2005; Hashimoto et al., 2007). Furthermore, several clinically effective antidepressant drug

  2023-11-07

The central problem in amnesia developing following impairment of long-term memory consolidation or reconsolidation is a question of the underlying mechanisms, whether it is caused by impairment of retrieval or memory storage mechanisms [3,8,9,[15], [16], [17], [18]]. To answer this question, severa

  2023-11-07

Our current knowledge on autophagy broadly differentiates it into three types: macroautophagy, microautophagy, and chaperone-mediated autophagy. Macroautophagy mainly involves the sequestration of cytoplasmic contents in a double-walled membrane followed by the fusion with the lysosomes. The lysosom

• The ambiguity surrounding the role played by the LOXs

  2023-11-06

The ambiguity surrounding the role played by the 15-LOXs in malignant biological processes stems also from the limitations of current animal models, and especially the usage of its 12/15-LOX murine homolog, which can also catalyze the production of 12-HETE. Indeed, the proinflammatory effect of 12-H

Several studies have demonstrated that depletion of functional ATR increases the sensitivity of cancer cells to oncogene-induced replication stress thereby hindering tumour growth and inducing extensive cell death (Gilad et al., 2010, Murga et al., 2011, Schoppy et al., 2012). Importantly, Schoppy e

Furthermore, low-affinity sites that share no structural homology with the aforementioned sites have been described in the transmembrane domain. It has been discovered that, in α1βγ2 receptors, potentiation of GABA-activated currents by high concentrations of diazepam is biphasic, with a high- and a

  2023-11-06

Enhancers are short regions of DNA that are bound by DNA-binding proteins (TFs) to increase the likelihood of a particular gene to be expressed. Importantly, enhancers can be identified, and classified, by their patterns of chromatin accessibility and of enrichment in certain histone modifications.

Finally, we argue that the estimated penetrance of 0.45% (95% CI 0.02%, 9.35%) calculated by leveraging the gnomAD (Lek et al., 2016) population data indicate that T201S is at most a low-risk gene variant for CJD. If we arbitrarily consider a central estimate of 10% or higher as the clinically signi

Mechanism of action In general, the main targets for antifungal drug development are cell wall polymer (glucans, chitin, mannoproteins), cell membrane (especially ergosterol) biosynthesis, DNA and protein synthesis (topoisomerases, nucleases, elongation factors and myristoylation), and signal tra

In addition, enhanced AT1 receptor function abnormally increases central and sympathetic activity, contributing to cardiac and renal disease, which in turn alters homeostasis, increases vulnerability to stress, and further injures the brain, and that AT1 receptor blockade ameliorates excessive sympa

  2023-11-06

The androgen receptor gene (AR) is located on the X-chromosome and consists of eight exons in humans (Brown et al., 1989; Kuiper et al., 1989). The similar gene structure in mice, monotremes and marsupials indicates AR is highly conserved in mammals (Choong et al., 1998; Faber et al., 1991; He et al

Prostate cancer and resistance to AR targeting treatment The AR plays a pivotal role in the development, differentiation, homeostasis and secretory function of the normal prostate (Wilson, 2011). The AR is also a key player in many phases of prostate carcinogenesis (Huggins et al., 1941, Scher an
